Video: Holiday Get Ready With Me!

Hello everyone!

For those of you who celebrate, happy Christmas Eve! I hope this holiday season is treating you ALL well, regardless of what you do or do not celebrate!

Today I have finally managed to edit together my holiday GRWM, despite the TERRIBLE internet at my parent's house!  I really hope you like this, I'm quite happy with how it turned out.  This makeup/hair/outfit was for a work party, but I'm actually wearing it to my family's Chirstmas as well, and might wear it with a few changes for New Year's Eve if I go out.

Have a safe and happy holiday season, everyone.  My next post/video will be my 2015 favourites, so stay tuned for that!

Video: My December Favourites

Hello everyone!

I wasn't going to do a monthly favourites this month, because a 2015 favourites is coming your way really soon.  However, there were some products that were just too good to not talk about!

Hope everyone is having a wonderful holiday!

An Excellent Idea, Origins!

Hello everyone!

On a recent Sephora trip, the employee directed me to what might be the best idea Origins has ever had.

These little pots allow you to sample their products for $5 (or 6 for $30, the price of a full-sized tube).  I have been wanting to try these for so long, but didn't want to splash out on something my skin might hate.

I picked up 3 of these little masks, the Original Skin, Out of Trouble, and Clear Improvement ones, and I'll get back to you about how I get on with them.

I think this is an excellent way to experience new products without shelling out all of your hard-earned money.  Well done Origins!

A Winter Favourite: Butterbear

Hello everyone!

LUSH has one of my favourite products back in and I'm so excited about it!

It's Butterbear, the "vanilla scented bear hug" bath bomb that's perfect for this season.  It smells so rich and warm.  It really is like a nice big hug in the bath.

I just wanted to shoot off a quick post to let you know this guy is in stock, he's only here for a limited time!  You can buy him HERE for only $4.95!

Festive Nail Polish Haul

Hello everyone!

I picked up 3 new nail polish shades for the holidays this week, and I think you'll really enjoy them!

They are all from H&M.  They have THE BEST nail polishes, I swear.  You can check out my full review HERE, but for now let's get into what I bought.

As I mentioned, I bought three shades, Bordeaux, Witching Hour, and Red Over Heels.

Bordeaux is a rich wine shade, nice and dark and vampy.  I have a Rimmel lipstick with the same name that matches it perfectly.

I love Witching Hour, mostly because of the name.  It's a dark teal shade, I actually have a shirt that is an exact match for this shade which is kind of fun.

And then Red Over Heels is a bold, bright red shade perfect for the holiday season.  I bought this for a Get Ready With Me that you'll be seeing soon! ;)

Enjoy your holidays everyone, and if you're looking for the perfect nail polish, I would highly recommend one of these shades!

Wonderful Dreams and Wonderful Packaging!

Hello everyone!

During a Secret Santa, I was lucky enough to be gifted the Wonderful Dreams palette from Sephora.  I thought I could do a little review for you today, because this would make such a good present, especially for a luxury beauty lover when you're on a budget.

This has the most amazing packaging.  The cute stars, shimmery foil details, I just love it so much! I also really like that the inside packaging is pink, it makes it a little bit more interesting rather than it all being one shade of beige. The cardboard might get beat up over time, but it does close nice and securely, so your shadows are safe.

Inside there are 8 shadows.

From right to left: Chantilly lace, Marron glace, Crystal Ball, Midnight Swim

From right to left: Soft cookie (VERY hard to see), Toasted almond, Pretty sunrise, Hot cocoa

I love it when palettes name and label their shadows.  I immediately like them more.

Okay, so to be honest the pigmentation is not that great on some of these shadows.  The mattes especially are a little patchy.  That being said, I still think this is a good palette.

This is the perfect blend of neautrals, shimmers, and matte shades.  The shimmer shades are way more pigmented and smooth than the mattes, and I think they would be good all over the lid, with the mattes used in the crease to deepen and blend.  Soft Cookie didn't show up well on camera because it's the exact shade of my skin, making it the perfect brown bone shade or a really good blending shade.

Out of all of the shades, Pretty Sunrise is my favourite. It has the best pigmentation and is just a stunning shade.

The colours in here can all be used together, which definitely gets extra marks from me.  And all of the colours are wearable too.

Overall, I give this palette a 7/10.  It loses marks on the quality of the matte shades, the shimmers are much better.  That being said, these are not even close to the worst quality mattes I've ever used, they're just firmly middle of the road.  I think this palette is perfect for a Secret Santa, someone on a budget, or even a stocking stuffer.

e.l.f. Blush Palette Review

Hello everybody!

In my recent e.l.f. Haul video, you will have seen that I bought the blush palette, and was already super excited to use it.

I feel like this has been hyped up online so much, but at such an inexpensive price, is it any good?!

This costs a mere $6 for 4 good-sized blushes.  Shipping is $8 to Canada, but if you buy $30 of stuff or more it's free, and they do have some other great products.

The packaging on this is awesome (in my opinion).  It's really sturdy and matte black, but it won't get a grubby as NARS matte black packaging does.  There is a HUGE mirror on the inside, and the best part for me is that each blush pops out.  If you buy any of their other palettes like this (they have another blush, a bronzing one, an illuminating one, and a contouring one) you can fully customize it when you travel so you can bring everything you need in one palette!

This is the Light palette, and it has such great colours in it.  There's your typical baby pink, an orangey bronze shade, and a rosy berry shade in a matte formula, and then a coral with gold glitter that's obviously shimmery.  I don't own hardly any matte blushes, and this palette just amped up my collection considerably.  I love all of these blushes.  They are smooth, incredibly pigmented, and don't feel cheap.  They are slightly powdery, but they still feel creamy.  They blend really well, they don't apply patchy, they're just excellent quality!

That mirror!  I've done a full face of makeup using only the mirror in this palette.
Worth noting too is that the one shimmer in this palette isn't overwhelmingly shimmery.  The glitter isn't too chunky when you apply it to your face, and it just gives your cheeks a really nice glow.

I would definitely recommend you buy this palette, it's amazing.  This has been my go-to palette since I got it, I haven't reached for any of my other blushes.  This would also make a great stocking-stuffer for that makeup junkie in your life.

I hope you found this helpful, sometimes products hyped online are just that, hype.  But I truly think this one has earned it.

Colouring Books: They Aren't Just For Kids!

Hello everyone!

I have been into colouring books since I could hold a Crayon, and luckily as an adult they have started making more complex designs for us older folks!

I have three books myself, Animal Kingdom by Millie Marotta, Enchanted Forest by Johanna Basford, and I have a smaller version of Animal Kingdom that tears out into individual postcards.

These are amazing.  The designs are just beautiful, I'm in awe of the illustrators.  It is so relaxing to sit down with a picture and make it my own in my own colours and patterns.

Colouring books are proven to decrease stress and anxiety levels and to reduce symptoms of depression.  As a student, I think these are an incredibly important self-care tool.

Most of these retail for between $15 and $25 depending on the store, and a pack of 56 pencil crayons is only $10!  These are definitely an excellent gift for anyone, especially the student or hardworking adult in your life.

M.O.T.D.: A Pink Lip I Don't Hate!

Hello everybody!

I was messing around with my makeup the other day and this look happened!

I was going for really natural, as per THIS video, but I added some products, namely eyeliner (which I haven't worn in months!) and a pink lip.

Maybelline Master Prime
Maybelline Fit Me Concealers in Light and Fair
The Body Shop Extra Virgin Minerals Powder + Covergirl Professional Powder
Physician's Formula Happy Booster Blush in Warm
Becca Shimmering Skin Perfecter in Champagne Pop

H&M Brow Sculptor
Maybelline Brow Drama

Maybelline The Nudes palette (just in the crease)
Rimmel Eyeliner in Bronze (very smudged and blended out)
Benefit Roller Lash

Essence Lip Liner in Cute Pink
Too Faced Melted Lipstick in Peony

I NEVER wear a pink lip, I think they look terrible, and when I got Peony I was so disappointed because I thought I could never wear it.  However, this lip combo is fabulous, and it uses two products I'm not too keen on the create an amazing look!

The Best Product For Eliminating Frizz

Hello everybody!

I have been loving this product for awhile now, but I don't think I've talked about it on my blog or on my channel.

It's the John Frieda Frizz Ease Secret Weapon Touch Up Creme and I am IN. LOVE.

I have very frizzy hair, and I'll admit that it isn't in the best condition.  But a dollop of this smoothed through the lengths and ends tames the frizz and makes my hair look so much sleeker and shinier.

This contains Avocado Oil, which I assume is the magic ingredient that gets my hair to behave.  It smells really nice, doesn't make your hair greasy (although you will want to wash it the next day), and is the best product I've ever found for eliminating frizz.  I definitely recommend it this holiday season to keep your hair looking amazing.

5 Festive-Makeup Must Haves

Hello everybody!

'Tis the season for holiday parties, whether with friends and family, at the office, or anywhere else you might be.

This is the time of year when EVERYONE breaks into festive makeup tutorials (and I will not be the exception to that!), but sometimes all you really need is a few select products to give you that perfect holiday look.

The first thing you need is a black liquid liner.  Whether you run it close to you lash line to hide falsies, or create a dramatic wing, black liner is definitely a festive necessity.

That festive red lip never goes out of style.  It's the one time of the year when I don't get glares from my parents for wearing red lipstick!  (Anyone else's parents do that? Red lips are a no-go?)  I love me a good red lip, and I definitely go a bit crazy with them throughout December.

Lashes are another thing that never goes out of style, and in the festive season I demand more and more from my mascaras.  Thus, I turn to falsies.  Ardell makes amazing ones at an affordable price, and I even reuse them.  You can go full dramatic, or subtle and fluttery.  I adore their lashes, and they're perfect for the holidays.

A full-coverage foundation is definitely NOT the way to go this season, you want dewy, fresh, and NATURAL skin.  Give a lighter coverage foundation a go, or even just a BB cream to let your natural skin shine through.  I just add on concealer as needed to cover blemishes, the  Urban Decay Naked Skin or Maybelline Fit Me are my go-tos.

And finally, let's amp up the glow factor and make our skin look even fresher (because we all know skin gets dry and flaky this time of the year).  Add on a highlighter to make your skin look full of life.  I personally like the Becca ones, both the pressed version on top of foundation and the liquid under.

So there are my 5 festive makeup must-haves.  Leave yours in the comments below!

The Perfect Gift for Every Logophile

I love writing.  I love words.  I write a blog publicly and journals privately.  I absolutely love to write and express myself through the written word.

Christmas is coming, and I have to perfect gift for the logophile in your life.

Pierre Belvedere, a French-Canadian company (woo!), makes the most amazingly beautiful journals I have ever found.  I honestly cannot compare them to any other journal I have ever filled.

The covers are so luxurious, coming in plenty of gorgeous covers with designs imprinted onto the leather.  The paper is thick and heavy, perfect for writing with fountain pens (unless I'm the only perso who uses those with verocity).  There are two thin ribbons for marking your place, each a different colour (which is important to me, if not you).

I buy these at Chapters Indigo or Amazon.  They can be pricey, usually coming in around $20 to $25 apiece, but they can go on sale, and I have even been lucky enough to find them at HomeSense for a mere $10.

If you have someone in your life who loves to write, keeps journals, or who you think may need an outlet for feelings they keep bottled up inside, these are an amazing gift.

The Life Saver: Secret Clinical Stress Response Antiperspirant

Hello everyone!

I can't remember if I've talked about this or not, but in the summer something about my body chemistry went insane and all of a sudden, deodorant didn't work on me.  At all.

I used men's formulas for awhile, thinking they might be formulated to be more effective, but even that wasn't enough for me.

It was so embarrassing, I felt like I was the smelly kid, and I was so incredibly self-conscious.

In walks the Secret Clinical Invisible Solid.

This has changed my life, without a word of a lie.  You apply it at night so that it has time to sink in, and even if you shower the next morning you are protected.  It definitely reduced the amount I sweat and kept me dry, but most importantly even if I do sweat (i.e. at the gym) I don't stink.

This particular formula is great, because I am definitely a stress sweater, and having anxiety means I tend to stress sweat a lot.  This deodorant protects even against stress sweat, which is more intense and smells worse too.

I know this might be a bit of a TMI post, but this isn't something people talk about even though many people have issues finding deodorants that work.  I would highly HIGHLY recommend this one, it has worked wonders for me and I am finally happy to say I am no longer the smelly kid.  Plus, party season is coming up and you definitely don't want to be worried about B.O. at your office party!

See you soon!

O.O.T.D.: St. Andrew's Ball

Hello everyone!

Last weekend, my boyfriend and I attended the St. Andrew's Society of Toronto's annual ball.  It was an excuse to dress up, look fancy, and dance a good ol' Highland Reel!

As Dutch as my last name may be, my ancestry is more closely Scottish (although the last 3 generations have all been born in Canada).  I'm part of the Galbraith and Fraser clans, in case anyone was wondering.

We'd done some dancing at this point and are a little bit shiny!
So what am I wearing?

Sash: Scottish National tartan
Pin: Galbraith Clan Pin
Shoes: Comfort Plus

Noteable Makeup:
Ardell Glamour 105 Lashes
H&M Brow Sculptor
Maybelline Fit Me Concealer
The Body Shop Extra Virgin Minerals Powder
H&M Eyeshadows
Estee Lauder Lipstick in Crushed Rose

It was such a fun night!  Kilts galore!  And I also got to meet the Minister of Science, Kirsty Duncan which pretty much made my night.

Here, have a haggis.

P.S. Yes I did eat the haggis.

Review: OGX Coconut Water Shampoo and Conditioner

Hello again!

I bought the OGX Coconut Water shampoo and conditioner not too long ago, and I thought I'd let you know how I'm getting on with it since everyone seems to talk about OGX products.

This set me back $9 for each bottle, and you get 385 mL per bottle.  It promises to hydrate hair and leave it shiny and silky, but without weighing it down.

After using the pair for the first time, I can honestly say I noticed an immediate difference in my hair.  It was incredibly soft!  A few weeks in, my hair was still soft, but the frizz had also been tamed and my hair felt and looked healthier.

Unfortunately, after using this for 6 weeks I have noticed it just isn't getting my hair clean enough.  I'm so disappointed, especially after having liked it so much at first.

As for scent, the scent of this doesn't linger.  I find that within 24 hours you can't smell the coconut scent in your hair anymore, which doesn't bother me at all, I just thought it was worth noting.  However, it is nice and strong while you are in the shower, and while your hair is drying.

I have a feeling if your hair is less thick than mine, this might be a good product for you.  However, I have thick hair that is prone to build-up and tends to be slightly oily.  This didn't work for me, but I don't think it's a bad product.  Just not one that I'll be repurchasing.

Fall Lookbook Bloopers

I'm not ashamed to say I occasionally (usually) have derpy photos.

Too fab for you!
Anecdote about this tree: I'm too short to climb up it myself so my photographer (boyfriend) had to lift me up under the arms and I kind of scrabbled my feet up until I was sitting.  The people nearby were confused. #shortpeopleproblems

When the photographer gets distracted by ducks (I mean, they are most definitely cuter than me, so I don't blame him.)
The Battle of Waterloo sans Napoleon.
When your photographer has had enough.
I hope you enjoyed a little behind the scenes of my fall lookbook!  I had so much fun shooting it, I thought you should see some of that fun. :)

A Little Haul

Hello everyone!

I picked up a few bits at the drugstore the other day and thought I would share my purchases with you.  Most things were actually re-stock, but there were some sneaky treats in there too! (Also, a lot of it was on sale, woo!)

The first thing I grabbed were the Balea 3-in-1 cleansing cloths.  You guys know I love these, and when they are on sale I always grab a few.  Plus, I only have 2 wipes left my current pack!

Then I picked up 3 Life Brand masks.  These are $1.99 each, or 3 for $5 so I always get 3.  I like to have them on hand for when a pamper evening strikes!  I'm pretty addicted to the GlamGlow mask currently, these are actually for my armpits.  I know that sounds weird, but I use clinical strength deodorant, so I like to do a mask to pull all that aluminium and bad stuff out about once a week.

A couple of makeup bits now.  I grabbed the new blush from essence's Good Girl Bad Girl collection.  This is in the shade Good Girls Wear Peach (I assume there is a bad girls equivalent?!) and it's really nice.  It's got a lot of shimmer to it, and it's quite pale, but this will be my go-to in winter when I'm the most fair and my skin is the most dull.

I also FINALLY got Touch Of Spice, the Maybelline matte lip stick.  You have no idea how hard I've been looking for this sucker.  Bonus: it was on sale.

I also picked up my ever-faithful Rimmel Wake Me Up foundation.  Believe it or not, I actually used up every scrap of my last bottle of this!  I went for a lighter shade, 100 Ivory, because these tend to be a little dark for me and I only get paler from here!

Bless Shopper's Drugmart, I always get samples and this time I got some really expesive brands.  I got two different types of Vichy cleansers, a NeoStrata micellar water, and a Givenchy perfume.  I only put one of each in the photo, but I actually got several packets of the perfume and cleanser.

And there you have it, a little haul for you. I'll see you soon with another post!
