Review: OGX Coconut Water Shampoo and Conditioner

Hello again!

I bought the OGX Coconut Water shampoo and conditioner not too long ago, and I thought I'd let you know how I'm getting on with it since everyone seems to talk about OGX products.

This set me back $9 for each bottle, and you get 385 mL per bottle.  It promises to hydrate hair and leave it shiny and silky, but without weighing it down.

After using the pair for the first time, I can honestly say I noticed an immediate difference in my hair.  It was incredibly soft!  A few weeks in, my hair was still soft, but the frizz had also been tamed and my hair felt and looked healthier.

Unfortunately, after using this for 6 weeks I have noticed it just isn't getting my hair clean enough.  I'm so disappointed, especially after having liked it so much at first.

As for scent, the scent of this doesn't linger.  I find that within 24 hours you can't smell the coconut scent in your hair anymore, which doesn't bother me at all, I just thought it was worth noting.  However, it is nice and strong while you are in the shower, and while your hair is drying.

I have a feeling if your hair is less thick than mine, this might be a good product for you.  However, I have thick hair that is prone to build-up and tends to be slightly oily.  This didn't work for me, but I don't think it's a bad product.  Just not one that I'll be repurchasing.

Fall Lookbook Bloopers

I'm not ashamed to say I occasionally (usually) have derpy photos.

Too fab for you!
Anecdote about this tree: I'm too short to climb up it myself so my photographer (boyfriend) had to lift me up under the arms and I kind of scrabbled my feet up until I was sitting.  The people nearby were confused. #shortpeopleproblems

When the photographer gets distracted by ducks (I mean, they are most definitely cuter than me, so I don't blame him.)
The Battle of Waterloo sans Napoleon.
When your photographer has had enough.
I hope you enjoyed a little behind the scenes of my fall lookbook!  I had so much fun shooting it, I thought you should see some of that fun. :)

A Little Haul

Hello everyone!

I picked up a few bits at the drugstore the other day and thought I would share my purchases with you.  Most things were actually re-stock, but there were some sneaky treats in there too! (Also, a lot of it was on sale, woo!)

The first thing I grabbed were the Balea 3-in-1 cleansing cloths.  You guys know I love these, and when they are on sale I always grab a few.  Plus, I only have 2 wipes left my current pack!

Then I picked up 3 Life Brand masks.  These are $1.99 each, or 3 for $5 so I always get 3.  I like to have them on hand for when a pamper evening strikes!  I'm pretty addicted to the GlamGlow mask currently, these are actually for my armpits.  I know that sounds weird, but I use clinical strength deodorant, so I like to do a mask to pull all that aluminium and bad stuff out about once a week.

A couple of makeup bits now.  I grabbed the new blush from essence's Good Girl Bad Girl collection.  This is in the shade Good Girls Wear Peach (I assume there is a bad girls equivalent?!) and it's really nice.  It's got a lot of shimmer to it, and it's quite pale, but this will be my go-to in winter when I'm the most fair and my skin is the most dull.

I also FINALLY got Touch Of Spice, the Maybelline matte lip stick.  You have no idea how hard I've been looking for this sucker.  Bonus: it was on sale.

I also picked up my ever-faithful Rimmel Wake Me Up foundation.  Believe it or not, I actually used up every scrap of my last bottle of this!  I went for a lighter shade, 100 Ivory, because these tend to be a little dark for me and I only get paler from here!

Bless Shopper's Drugmart, I always get samples and this time I got some really expesive brands.  I got two different types of Vichy cleansers, a NeoStrata micellar water, and a Givenchy perfume.  I only put one of each in the photo, but I actually got several packets of the perfume and cleanser.

And there you have it, a little haul for you. I'll see you soon with another post!

Review: H&M Nail Polishes

Hello friends!

In a continuation of my H&M Cosmetics line reviews, I bring you a post about their new nail polishes.

These retail for $6.99 each, not a bad price for a bottle of nail polish in my opinion.  The packaging is simple, gold writing on the clear glass bottle, and a white cap.  Very clean and simple like the rest of the line.

I bought two different colours, Stucco and Copper Penny.  Stucco is a regular formula and Copper Penny is a metallic.

Stucco is a gorgeous bluey-greeny-grey shade.  It's so incredibly unique, I'm not even sure how to describe it.  In some lights it looks more green-grey and in others more blue-grey.  I think the best description would be a grey robin's egg shade.

Copper Penny is a brilliant metallic bronze.  Again, I have never seen a shade like this.  There might have been a similar colour in Essie's fall collection this year, but this would be a cheaper dupe for that.

I have to say, I am incredibly impressed with these polishes.  I didn't really have high hopes, especially as someone who doesn't really care for nail polish.  But the first time I used Stucco, I fell in love.  It is so opaque you can get away with a single coat (although I still used two, it's just personal preference), it dries really quickly, in under 10 minutes, and it doesn't chip easily.  Usually my nail polish chips within a day, but it took a solid 3 days for this to chip (and I'm hard on my manicures). Copper Penny is the same, very opaque, quick-drying, and chip proof.  I love that all of the formulas are the same, whether regular or metallic.

I definitely would suggest you try these polishes, they are absolutely amazing.

VIDEO: 5 Minute Makeup Using 7 Products

Hello everyone!

I posted an actual tutorial today!  I haven't done one of these in a hot minute, I find them tricky to get in shot.

Today's video, however, is super easy.  It's a 5 minute makeup (yup, I've timed myself doing it!) that uses only 7 products, most of which are from the drugstore.

Babbling Book Revies: Poles Apart by Terry Fallis

Hello everyone!

I read Poles Apart by Terry Fallis recently, and decided a review was in order.

*As always, potential spoilers ahead.*

This book is about a (Canadian!) man named Everett Kane.  Part of the feminist movement when he was at Ryerson University, Everett is now a struggling freelance writer who, against everything he stands for, has spent most of his career writing articles for cosmetic magazines.

When his father has a stroke, Everett moves to Florida, rents an apartment, and becomes a part of his misogynistic father's recovery.  At the rehabilitation centre, he meets Beverley Tanner, and feminist who dropped off the grid, but made a huge impression on Everett while he was in school.

That's all I will summarize, so that I don't ruin the book for you.  I have to say, I love the Canadian focus of Terry Fallis's books.  As a Canadian, I can appreciate a setting I know quite well!

Here is the thing.  I read this book expecting it to be a book about feminism.

It isn't.

That's not to say it isn't worth reading, not at all.  But I think it is important to note that this is a book about a feminist blogger, not about feminism.  There are, however, feminist elements.

I really did like this book.  I read it very quickly, it only took me about 3 days.  I did find it slightly predictable, but I liked the characters, I loved the way it was written, and I'm a sucker for a happy ending.  There was even one part where my heart was racing in fear, and that's not an easy feat to write!

So if you can check out Poles Apart by Terry Fallis, I definitely think it's worth a read.

Fresh Sugar Lip Delight Holiday Set

Hello everyone!

In my October Favourites video, I mentioned how much I have been loving the Fresh Sugar Lip balms.  They are the BEST lip products I have ever used.

I recently ordered the holiday set off of the Sephora website.  This retails for $65 and contains 7 minis.  There are 5 tinted balms in the shades Fig, Ruby, Tulip, Rose, and Nude.  The other 2 minis are a lip treatment and an advanced lip treatment.

If you break it down, these are $9.30 each for 2.2 grams of product.  Obviously, that's still expensive.  This set isn't exactly a great deal.  That being said, there are a few perks.

I love that you get to try several different tints and treatments to see what you like.  These are pretty sheer, so there isn't really any shade that looks terrible on me, however I can see that there is a pretty small niche of people who would like all of these like I do.

These also last a decently long amount of time for the size.  In my previous purchase of these, I used all of Rose in about a month and a half, but I used it multiple times per day every day.  I practically bathed in it.

These are perfect purse size, great for on the go.  The cap screws on and is super tight so they don't get gross in the bottom of your purse. They smell and taste great.  And more importantly, THEY WORK.  My lips are repaired overnight when I use this before bed, and stay hydrated throughout the day when I use it daily.  These don't do that annoying thing some lip products do where they initially work but over time make your lips more chapped.  These are the makeup equivalent of crack.

I highly recommend these lip balms despite the hefty price tag.  Try out the kits with minis before you commit to a full size if you're nervous about shelling out $25 for a full size.  I love having lots of these minis so I always have options.

The Best Boots

Welcome back!

I have absolutely fallen in love with these boots from H&M.  I searched for so long for the perfect pair of boots for fall, and came up short until I found these.

They only cost a mere $40, the least expensive of any pair I looked at.  I love that they have a faux suede panel on the back to add some texture.

The leather of the boot itself is very durable.  I've been wearing these 5 out of 7 days of the week since early September and they've held up very well, especially considering the cost.  The zipper up the back is silver and also very durable.  I love the accent of the zipper and the tassel pull on it.

Another bonus to these: they are waterproof.  I've worn them in the rain through puddles several times and my feet always end up dry.

I wear these all the time, sometimes every single day.  They are so comfortable and they go with everything.  Check out your local H&M or their website for these boots, or just browse their excellent selection of boots that are perfect for fall.

Body Shop Haul

Hello everyone!

I was in The Body Shop not too long ago and they were having one of their buy 3 get 3 free sales.  Since I was picking up 3 things I needed, I decided to try out 3 new products!

I needed a new bottle of tea tree oil because mine is almost out and I use it on my face after cleansing but before moisturizing every. Single. Day.  It keeps my skin so nice, I can't live without it.

I've been needing a toner for awhile, so I picked up the Seaweek Clarifying Toner to try out.  I've used it a couple of times and I can honestly say it does deeply cleanse!  The first time I used it I woke up to some scary zits!

I also needed a better eye cream, so I picked up the Vitamin E eye cream.  I love the moisturizer, so hopefully this is just as good!

I also got the Vitamin E night cream.  This might be a little heavy for my skin now, but winter is fast approaching so my skin is about to get DRY.

Then a couple of treats, I got the Coconut Eau de Parfum because I love their coconut scent.  I also got the coconut hand cream in teh metal tube because as the weather changes my hands get dry and cracked and it HURTS.  Hopefully this will combat that.

So there's my little haul.  I love these sales, what should I buy next time they have one?!

5 Couldn't-Live-Without Makeup Products

Hello everyone!

I got the idea watching THIS video to do a 5 products I couldn't live without post.  In typical fashion, this got lost in my drafts folder, but with midterms it works out having this lying around!

1) Maybelline Brow Drama Gel

I wear this every. Single. Day.  Even on no makeup days.

I did a full review in January, and my opinion hasn't changed.  This keeps my extremely unruly brows in place all day long without being too stiff.  It adds a little bit of colour and evens them out as well, and just in general makes my horrendous brows 100 times better.

2) Mascara

I don't necessarily have a specific one, although I LOVE the Maybelline LashSensational one.  I just love mascara.  It makes my lashes look longer and thus makes me look more awake. I think there is nothing prettier than natural makeup with long, full lashes.  It's effortless and simple and just emphasizes your natural beauty.

3) Face Powder

Again, I don't really have a specific one.  I love The Body Shop's Extra Virgin Mineral powder, and the Rimmel Stay Matte.  Powders are great because they even out your skin tone and keep you from looking shiny but don't weigh on your skin like foundation (and are a lot lower maintenance).  I don't wear a lot of foundation, I'd rather wear powder with a little bit of concealer if needed.

4) Fresh Sugar Lip Tints

Oh man are these expensive (but so worth it).  These are so moisturizing, better than any lip balm I've ever tried.  They smell amazing too.  I especially like that they have a little bit of a tint to it, again, really great for minimal/no makeup days.  These aren't greasy at all, and sink into the lips really nicely.  I just love them.

5) Olay Fresh Effects BB Cream

My final must-have product is this BB cream.  This is strongly scented, which I don't really like, but it evens out my skin tones and hydrates really well.   It looks really natural and fresh (as the name suggests) without being heavy (and it never goes cakey).  Total win-win.

Okay, so that's the 5 products I could not live without!  Let me know what yours are in the comments.

O.O.T.D.: 20 Degrees in November?!

That's in Celsius folks.

Yes, on November 5th it was a whopping 20 degrees outside.  I couldn't believe it!  However, as someone who hates winter, I wasn't complaining!

I donned a fun top with tons of colour from The Bay, my favourite jeans from Maurice's, and a pair of fun sandals from Montego Bay Club (Payless) that I have worn half to death.  I had a long day of classes, so I went makeup free.  All the better to feel that warm sun on my face!

The only downside? My hair reverted to hot-weather mode. a.k.a. Frizz central!

I'm so glad we had such a nice day, I'll try to remember it mid-February!

Video: October Favourites

Hello everyone!

After 2 weeks without videos, I'm back with my October Favourites.

After my huge hauls at the beginning of the month, I had a lot of products to try out and see if I liked (Spoiler: there are a lot in this video!)  Unfortunately, I also had a lot of work to do, especially in the last couple of weeks between paper and midterms (and my jobs).  Sorry for the two week gap between videos, but I'm back!

I hope you enjoy this video, and consider giving the products in it a try.  They are all amazing, total makeup routine changers!

Review: H&M Velvet Lip Cream

Hello everyone!

Continuing with my H&M makeup reviews, today I'm looking at the Velvet Lip Creams.

I bought the shade Screen Siren, a deep vampy read shade.  The other shades didn't really appeal to me, but I'm sure other people love them (I'm picky.)

This retails for $12.99, so not cheap.  The packaging is plain, although I really like that the tube is clear so you can see the colour of the product.  The applicator is flat, kind of unusual for lip creams and glosses. I really don't like how hard it is to read the writing, I wish it was gold like on their other products.

Here's the product swatched on my lips.  I used a lip liner because products such as this tend to bleed.

I have a few major issues with this product.  First, it is patchy.  Not unusual for these dark shades, but it's hard to even it out, especially if it's dried even a little bit.

Second, it begins to flake almost immediately. NOT CUTE. AT ALL.

And third, if you press your lips together, it transfers and becomes more patchy, even if it's set.

Also it's incredibly drying. My lips are so chapped from wearing this.

This is a huge fail for me, which sucks because I was really hoping after the nail polish and eye shadow success that these would be great.  That being said, some high end brands have difficulties creating good liquid lip sticks and creams, so I at least have to applaud H&M for trying.

xoxo
